How does stress affect your business?

Stress is the awareness of not being able to cope with the demands of one's environment, be those demands arising from work or at home.

To put it simply, stress is what happens to our body and emotions when we are in an unhealthy situation. High levels of stress have been shown to cause a variety of workplace problems, with implications for staff safety and health (Health and Safety in Employment Act, 1992).

  • More preventable accidents
  • Interpersonal and team conflict
  • Impaired decision-making
  • Chronic fatigue
  • Low job commitment
  • Increased avoidable attrition
  • A culture of blame

What does stress mean for you and your staff?

Stress is synonymous with environmental stimulation. We each require a certain amount to provide interest in our lives, maintain healthy relationships, and motivate us to achieve our goals.

Everyone differs in the particular "requirements" they need, depending upon their personal goals, experiences, personality, wishes, and motives. When those requirements are not met, we tend to find our behaviour and feelings change over time. These reactions are sometimes things we don't like, affect our health, and impair our relationships. Some of the more common stress reactions are listed below.

  • Behavioural reactions
  • Disrupted sleep patterns
  • Impatience & irritability
  • Impaired time management
  • Emotional reactions
  • Poor concentration
  • Lowered self-esteem
  • Depression & anxiety
  • Difficulty relaxing
  • Loss of motivation and goal-setting
  • Physical reactions
  • Headaches & migraines
  • Gastro-intestinal disorders
  • Lowered immune resistance

What can we do for you?

Our network possesses considerable expertise in occupational health. Our team has consulted to some of the most hazardous and stress-inducing jobs in New Zealand.  We assess the situation and provide a customised solution you need (audit and assessment of health and safety systems and policies, training seminars and workshops, one-on-one coaching, counselling, and/or case management advice) rather than a single package applied to every business.

We provide:

Stress Management and Resiliency Training

From 1 Hour speaking engagements to Full Day workshops. We can provide training off site or on site to suit client needs, and can customize content to suit organizational culture and operational environment.

We can:

  • Respond to an urgent need,
  • Become part of a fun team-build day,
  • Become part of a team to help a company ensure staff and managers are well-trained and equipped to deal with expected and normal workplace stressors.

Specialised Occupational Health Training for Managers

3-4 hour seminars to ensure a management team (minimum six) is up to date as to their responsibilities for workplace stress under the Health and Safety in Employment Act; that they know what to look for, what to do and, more importantly, how to do it. The focus on the training is on actual case studies, practical examples, and developing skills of communicating and managing someone experiencing workplace stress who is likely to take a personal grievance.

Stress Audits

After an initial assessment of a company's needs we use a combination of confidential interviews, group facilitation, surveys, and review of documentation (including internal policies, position descriptions, health and safety reports etc) to assess exactly where a company is at in terms of stress levels and what reasonable responses can be made, if any. Our audits provide an analysis of impact on business output, implications for liability, and policy review.

Highly desirable when a company wants:

  • An independent assessment
  • Confidence that the assessor understands business and business systems
  • Confidence that the assessment will use robust methods that will withstand criticism in court
  • To find out what needs to be done, where, with whom, and how

Employee Assistance Services and Personal Coaching

We can provide confidential assistance to employees experiencing significant workplace stress particularly in areas that include bullying and intimidation, interpersonal conflict, high workload, work-life imbalance, and general job stress.  Our coaching approach works with individual managers looking to upskill their knowledge and capability to manage some difficult situations or individuals they are responsible for.
